The World's Highest Thru-Hike

Traversing the Himalaya in Nepal

The Great Himalayan Trail (GHT) is a breathtaking (literally) high-altitude trek stretching across Nepal, via towering mountain passes, dense forests, and an astonishing variety of landscapes.

The GHT high route presents the ultimate adventure for experienced hikers, with technical challenges, and many opportunities to develop a deep appreciation for the wonderful dish dal bhat.

Snapshot of our GHT Plan

We will start from Kanchenjunga Base Camp in the east in April 2025. It will take about one week of walking just to reach the start of the trail.

Then we wind our way west with plenty of acclimatization, rest/sick, and weather days.

We will have 1-2 weeks as the monsoon starts in mid June before we reach Nepal's rain shadow to complete the journey. Our ideal itinerary has us finishing in September in Hilsa.

Partners on the Journey

We are working with Angs Himalayan Adventures to manage our permits, compulsory guided sections, and logistics in Nepal. Ang is a multiple Everest summiteer and was the trip leader on Kristy’s first visit to Nepal in 2006!

Through Ang, who helped design their high altitude backpack, we have been lucky to get the support of Hyperlite Mountain Gear who are providing two SouthWest 70L ultralight backpacks and an Ultamid 4.

After our epic hike we are looking forward to staying at Siddhartha Vilasa Banbas in Chitwan, an outstanding resort managed by local entrepreneurs, environmentalists, and women’s empowerment leaders, Bashu and Sita.

More Information

There are some folks who have put a lot of effort into making this trail a reality. Namely Robin Boustead, who developed the concept and has created maps, a guide book, and other resources.

Also Dave Brophy aka Wilderness Prime, who has an extensive overview of his journey in 2019 online. While his route may not be as up to date now, he also admins a WhatsApp group for people interested in attempting the trail.
